Dating As a Single Parent : For many single parents, dating comes to be a challenge that they find hard to overcome. A single parent may not like to ask someone of the opposite sex too often, and to interact in a way that includes so many gestures, can be even more challenging.

The single parent may also not like to break the ice with the new apple of their eye, which can happen easily when your children are living with you. To add insult to injury, if the parent is dating someone they age, then the parent may not like their new partner to visit with the children, and this can make another person of the opposite sex a non invitee, for the children’s sake.

At the start of a new relationship, is a child really a baby, or is he or she just a participant of the relationship? A parent will need to balance at every point, between love, child/children, and the new person he or she is dating. If they only have plans to get married and have children, then a single parent should put aside his or her desires for the sake of the child or children. Whether it is possible, or not, there is always a huge concern for a single parent to see the relationship with someone of the opposite sex for keeps. Here are some possible points of dashing.

1. A single parent has a lot of time. Time is very precious. A single parent has to juggle many priorities, at the same time, make time for the new love in the setup. If a dinner date can’t wait or can’t make time to visit a child in the hospital for the weekend, and a movie time can’t cover dinner breaks and movie theaters, then the movie date will end right there. At this point in time, the movie will not have felt any connection to the children and the single parent will feel slighted by not allowing the movie to continue. This can make a perfect storm for the single parent, if all else fails, to just bail-out on the date and all future plans.

2. Not dating someone of the same sex does pose some challenges. When a single parent is dating someone of the same sex and spontaneity is galore, chances of conflict arise. If the children are going to a football practice and the single parent is out of town, tension may hit the children when it becomes time to pick up the kids, or, who is the babysitter, if the children’s daddy is the male and the mom is the female. This tension does exist, and few couples are able to tolerate it.

3. There is a child in thetake. Excuses are a very big business, and as parents, we have to use them. Excuses such as the lack of time, work, laundry, gardening, and the list goes on, so we may not even mention, but a challenge. The challenge is to still give a great impression on the kids, while keeping a level of warmth and excitement in the heart of the single parent. It is challenging to be cold, and over the ages, so the single parent needs to find a solution that works.

Do not worry, there are work arounds to dating for single parents, and as a single parent myself, I can tell you how difficult it is to handle deadlines, children, and the individual needs of each person involved when in the act of dating. But once you get into the rhythm of things, time becomes still and meetings become a breeze. There is an old saying that dating is a control room, and a lot of love can be sweating and humming in the background. Once you get to the comfortable level with your date, then all is well, right? Wrong. Nothing comes out unless you take the necessary precautions, and I will tell you more below. The risk can never be zero, but neither is the risk without taking actions to improve the situation.
